What is a perm?

A permanent wave permanently changes the structure, and ultimately texture, of the hair.

This is done by breaking the disulphide bonds inside the hair shaft and setting it into a new shape - curl, wave or texture - that lasts wash after wash.

What are the benefits?

Perming is a great option if you:

• Want blow-drys to hold in the hair better in-between washes

9 steps to perfect curls

1. Prepare your hair

Shampoo hair prior to perming with a clarifying or detoxifying shampoo. This will remove any build-up or impurities from the hair that may interfere with the perming process.

Rinse thoroughly and towel dry.

Comb hair and divide into six sections, fastening each one with a sectioning clip.

2. Wind it up

Starting at the neckline section, take a section of hair no wider than the perm rod. Comb the hair through and fold an end tissue in half and slide it over the tips to keep them flat.

Place the perming rod at the end of the tissue and wind under firmly but gently and fasten close to the scalp.

Wind all of the perming rods in the same way ensuring they are well secured.

For the best effect, use as many perm rods as you can.

Remember: The smaller the rod size is, the tighter the curl will be.

3. Protect yourself

We recommend wearing plastic gloves and applying a barrier cream and/or a strip of cotton wool around the hairline to protect your skin throughout the perming process. Be sure to protect your clothing as well.

4. Mix and apply

Open the Curl Booster sachet and pour its contents into the Waving Lotion. Shake well.

Apply Waving Lotion and Curl Booster mixture by tipping the bottle and directing the lotion through the nozzle onto each perming rod until the hair is extremely well saturated.

5. Test a curl

After 10 minutes of processing, it's time to check if your curls have taken sufficiently. To do this:

  • Partially unwind one of the front perming rods
  • Push the perming rod back towards your head and look for a definite 'S' shaped wave. If your hair forms a definite 'S' shape, it's ready to rinse
  • If no 'S' shape is apparent re-wind the perming rod and check it again every three to five minutes up to the maximum time shown in the instructions.

6. Rinse and dry

Remove the cotton wool from around the hairline.

Leaving the perm rods securely in place, rinse them thoroughly with plenty of very hot water. Rinse for at least five minutes on short hair and a generous seven to ten minutes on longer hair.

Pat dry with a towel to remove excess water.

Re-fasten any loose perming rods.

Wrap hair in a towel and leave for 30-45 minutes to absorb any excess water.

7. Neutralise

Once again, protect the skin around the hairline with a barrier cream and/or cotton wool.

Shake the neutraliser bottle until the liquid forms a rich foam.

Use the applicator cap provided - or use non-metallic bowl and clean sponge - to apply 2/3 of the neutraliser to the hair. Saturate each rod with solution and leave for 5 minutes.

8. Unwind and re-neutralise

Carefully remove all perming rods and end tissues, taking care not to stretch or disturb the curls.

Gently massage the remaining neutraliser into your hair with your fingertips.

Wait for a further three minutes then rinse thoroughly with warm water only; do not use shampoo.

If required, conditioner can be applied.

9. Style your masterpiece

Your hair can now be dried either by setting, gently blow-drying or leaving it to dry naturally.
